Class Description:

Celebrate Dad with a handmade touch! In this fun and beginner-friendly class, I will guide you step-by-step through creating a custom Father’s Day apron—and a matching “assistant” version—using your Silhouette machine.

You’ll learn how to navigate Silhouette Studio, including my favorite tips and tricks for resizing and testing designs for heat transfer vinyl (HTV). Then we’ll walk through cutting and applying the HTV design using either a heat press or a household iron.

I’ll demonstrate using a Silhouette Cameo 5, but any Silhouette machine will work for this project. Perfect for gift-giving, memory-making, and crafting with love!

There are so many fun things to do with the new Silhouette Curio 2! Here’s a first look at engraving with the Curio 2 on metal sheets. Check out my latest Silhouette Craft Along class below for this Curio 2 engraved Christmas gnome!

Craft Along Video: Engraved Christmas Gnome

Supplies/Tools:

(Includes some affiliate links)

• Curio 2
• Debris Tray for Curio 2
• Power Engraver tool for Curio 2
• Metal etching sheet – gold
• Silhouette masking tape
• 5″ x 7″ Frame
• Soft paintbrush or toothbrush
• Scrap of thin paper for height registration
• Design ID #387516 “Christmas Gnome”

Instructions:

Setup —

1. Unlock and remove ES bed from Curio 2
2. Slide in and lock debris tray
3. Place etching blank in upper left corner, using guides on tray
4. Tape in place (not where design will be engraved)

Software —

1. Page Setup for debris tray & media size (change mat; change media to 5×7, portrait orientation)
2. Open Design ID #387516
3. Select design and resize (3.5” wide for 5” wide frame)
4. Center and nudge into position for visual balance
5. [Specialty Tools Panel] Choose engraving fill pattern + spacing
   • Power Engraver tab
   • Spiral pattern
   • Spacing 0.010
6. Send Panel
7. Set up for Carriage 2
   • Connect Curio 2 machine
   • Expand Carriage 2 (Collapse Carriage 1)
   • Select design
   • Choose “Power Engraver Action” and LINES SHOULD TURN BLUE
   • Choose Material (may need custom setting) – Metal Sheets, Etching

• • • Force 15
    • Speed 1-3
    • Passes 1

8. Material Thickness Detection (manual for clear, glitter, shiny, reflective)
   • Click Send at bottom right of screen
   • Confirm and Send checklist – load media, load tool, Send again
   • Follow steps

On Machine —

9. Place tape or thin matte material (parchment paper) over center of material
10. Use arrow buttons to position Carriage 1 over this area
11. Click Detect Thickness [in software]
12. Remove tape/paper

Software —

13. Skip to Send
14. Send final time (Should take about 20 minutes with these settings; will vary based on density of fill, speed, passes)

Tips:

• Brush away debris with soft paintbrush or toothbrush (or vacuum)
• Acrylic sheets usually have protective layer to be removed before engraving
• Soft engraving surfaces are easily scratched

I hope you enjoy this Curio 2 engraved project! This same process and settings are pretty much the same with acrylic sheets. Odd sizes other than rectangles and squares need a few more steps, and I’ll make a tutorial for that in the future.

Have you been curious about the new Electrostatic Mat (ES Mat) that you can purchase to go with the new Silhouette Cameo 5? I’ll take some of the mystery out of the process with a fun and simple project in this Craft Along class. Let’s make some hanging snowflakes!

Craft Along Video: Hanging Snowflakes

Supplies/Tools:

(Some affiliate links)

• Silhouette Cameo® 5
• Electrostatic Mat with protector sheet
• Autoblade
• Smooth copy paper
• String/thread/twine
• Glue stick, or high-quality liquid glue in needle-tip applicator
• Design ID #389372 Christmas Snowflake
• BLACK FRIDAY SALE THROUGH 11/26/23: CAMEO 5 w/ ES MAT BUNDLE

Optional:

• Toothbrush
• Needle-tip tweezers
• Bone folder

Instructions:

Software Instructions:

1. Page Setup: Cameo 5, ES Mat, Letter media size, Show Cut Border (Grid – maybe)
2. Open Design ID #389372 Christmas Snowflake
3. Resize to about 4.5” W
4. Draw vertical line about 4.2” H
5. Change line to dashed line style
6. Center snowflake + perforation line
7. Group
8. Make 2 more copies
9. Position all 3 on page within the cut border

• Go to Send Panel
• Connect machine
• Set Carriage 1 Material: Copy Paper, Med (20lb)
• Adjust to Blade Depth 2, Force 15-17, Speed 3-10
  

Demo:

1. Set up ES Mat by opening bottom cover of Cameo 5 and inserting ES mat connections (click)
2. Place protection sheet on first (before turning on – easier and avoid zap)
3. Place paper on mat before or after turning on – easier before turned on
4. Turn on mat with power button, give a minute to charge
5. Smooth down any bubbles, from center out
6. Load into machine by sliding bar towards rollers and giving light pressure while pushing Cameo’s LOAD arrow
7. (Software will remind if forget to load)
8. SEND cut job (test settings first)
9. Unload when finished with Cameo UNLOAD arrow

• Turn off ES mat
• Lift paper off ES mat, use soft toothbrush to brush off protector sheet (to side, not into grooves)

Assemble:

1. Fold snowflakes in half along perforated line
2. Apply glue to half of each snowflake, align halves, press together
3. Add thread or string to hang

Tips:

• Use a clean, soft toothbrush or paintbrush to brush debris off to side
• Keep tracks clean
• Do not store objects on top of ES mat
• Do not use wrinkled or dirty ES protector sheet
• Use IPT if cuts move too much (turn on in advanced material settings)
• Use masking tape at corners if too much movement
